Iman Rescue Turtle

female Olive Ridley turtle (RB.LO.183), admitted 25 November 2019, Landaa Giraavaru, Baa Atoll, Maldives

Weight / Length: 13.0kg / 46.2cm (on admission);

Iman was found by boat crew, entangled in a ghost fishing net (with a second turtle, Nadia) on our House Reef here at Landaa Giraavaru. The net was wrapped very tightly, inflicting deep wounds to the head and flippers.

On admittance to our turtle rescue centre, we immediately cleaned the wounds and administered antibiotics.

Updates January 2020

Iman showed great improvements since arriving at our Centre. We administered antibiotics, and applied Gentian Violet to the wounds, which went on to heal very well.

Iman was refusing to eat at first, so was given fluid injections for 8 days, before regaining an appetite and starting to eat every meal! After presenting buoyancy issues for the first few weeks in the centre, she started to dive and rest on the bottom of the recovery pool, and was successfully released back into the ocean on 06 January (with tags MS0017-18) alongside one of our other patients, Samu.
