Samu
juvenile Olive Ridley turtle (RB.LO.187), admitted 17 December 2019, Landaa Giraavaru, Baa Atoll, Maldives
Weight / Length: 6.0kg / 38.6cm (on admission); 7.3kg / 38.7cm (on release).
Samu was found here at Four Seasons Resorts Maldives, Landaa Guraavaru. She was floating on the ocean surface, entangled in a large ghost fishing net – a collection of marine debris carried by seasonal ocean currents into Maldivian waters, likely originating in Sri Lanka or India.
Samu is in good health, without serious injury. She very active and able to rest on the bottom of our recovery pool (not suffering from sea turtle buoyancy syndrome). We are applying topical ointment, and feeding with good quality foods to increase muscle mass. We will then start hydrotherapy in our ocean enclosure, to assess when Samu is ready for release … hopefully very soon!

Updates January 2020
Samu has been very active every day, and had a healthy appetite since arrival. She did not suffer from buoyancy syndrome, and was successfully released back into the ocean (alongside Iman) on 6 January.
