Sandy Rescue Turtle

juvenile Olive Ridley turtle (RB.LO.197), admitted 1 February 2020, Anantara, S.Malé Atoll, Maldives

Weight / Length: 8.5kg / 44.1cm (on admission);

Sandy was found floating on the ocean surface, by staff at Anantara resorts (South Malé Atoll). On arrival at our turtle rescue and rehabilitation centre at Kuda Huraa, she was found to be suffering from turtle buoyancy syndrome (unable to dive below the water surface) but without any visible injuries. She is under close observation and treatment.

Unfortunately, Sandy was observed to be “coughing” blood, so we will transfer her to the ORP for diagnosis and treatment by their resident veterinarian.

On 6 February, Sandy was transferred to the ORP, where she was diagnosed as suffering from a large lung tear. The team successfully removed 2L of air from her body cavity, so she is now sitting lower in the water.

Get well soon, Sandy. 💚
