LaithRescue Turtle

adult male Olive Ridley turtle (RB.LO.XXX), admitted 24 December 2023, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives

Weight / Length: xx.xkg / xx.xcm (on admittance)

Laith (adult male Olive Ridley) – found on 24 December near Adaaran Vadoo Resort (Kaafu/South Malé Atoll). He was entangled in a ghost net alongside a juvenile green sea turtle (healthy and immediately released) and an adult female Olive Ridley (deceased).

On arrival at our Turtle Rescue Centre, Laith was found to be extremely dehydrated, with a skinny body score, altered buoyancy, and some caseous tissue (skin infection). The front right was flipper severely necrosed, the contralateral limb had a deep ligature wound, the hind left was partially lacerated and necrosed.
We administered fluid therapy, systemic antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and wound management with local anaesthetic.

LAITH stranded Olive Ridley turtle Maldives

Updates January 2024

Laith arrived with two flippers necrosed, lethargic behaviour, very dehydrated, and physically weak.

Despite our best efforts he did not make it and sadly died. During the necropsy, we diagnosed sepsis, a life-threatening complication from infection, causing the body to have a severe inflammatory response to bacteria.
