Honu, Bodhi, Oscar, Rex, Tony – our green turtle juveniles are are developing well and gaining weight quickly, and are now in their “toddler phase” as seen by their behaviour! They have become very bold and boisterous, often making a scene when they leave the pool for our monitoring sessions!
As our rescue Olive Ridley turtles recover from their injuries and are released, we will be able to move our Head Start hatchlings into the larger pools. This increased space should help them grow to our target size of 30cm before release. In the mean time, these toddlers are more than happy to play with enrichment devices (turtle toys) and eat up all the lettuce they can manage!
12 April 2017
On 12 April, we had the privilege of releasing not one but THREE of our gorgeous green turtle juveniles!
After 11 months of care, our 'head start' turtles Tony, Oscar and Bodhi had all reached the desired size of 30cm and a healthy weight of over 4kg!
This Easter celebration release event attracted a large guest turnout, who cheered the turtles as they made their way down the beach to the ocean. Tony led the pack and showed the younger pairing just how it was done, making a perfect route down the beach and off out into the deep.
Bodhi and Oscar however had other ideas! This sleepy pair of brothers were rather confused as to what we were asking of them; frequently turning themselves around to walk back up to the safety of the rehab pools. After some encouragement from supporters, they both figured out where to go and set off to explore the lagoon.
