Shelby Rescue Turtle

juvenile Hawksbill turtle (RB.EI.025), admitted 8 April 2018, Sand Bank, N.Malé Atoll, Maldives

 

Length / Weight: 22.3cm / 1.25kg (on admission); 

A post hatchling hawksbill turtle was found by our Recreation staff, entangled in a ghost net near a Sand Bank in North Malé Atoll. Shelby was brought to us with a cut in the carapace, but she is diving in our recovery pool and has started trying some food. She will stay at our turtle care centre until she is healthy enough to return to the wild.

01 July 2018 – Release Day !

Shelby was successfully released back into the ocean today, along with Head Start graduates Lily and Banana. The three turtles were released on a snorkeling trip at Makunudu (N.Malé atoll), and after a moment of orientation they swam down to start feeding.
