Olive Ridley turtle (RB.LO.xxx), admitted 26 January 2024, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives

Kunnu was found floating near Dhigufinolhu (Kaafu Atoll) with his front left flipper spontaneously amputated, and with a clearly protruding humerus. He also has an 18cm long ligature wound around the neck.

On arrival at our turtle rescue centre at Kuda Huraa, we performed surgery to amputate the bone.

Kunnu is showing good progress every day – he is eating well, he can dive and rest comfortably on the bottom of the pool.

February Updates

Kunnu has shown remarkable recovery since his admittance. Being able to dive, rest on the bottom, and eat all types of protein. His wounds are progressing well, especially the ligature wound around the neck, which is now almost completely healed.


Kunnu has shown improvements every day. With wounds almost completely healed, diving, resting on the bottom of the tank and an ideal body score, he will be ready for release soon.


Kunnu has come a long way since his arrival. After four months of intense rehabilitation he is healthy and deemed ready for release, which we have scheduled for 4 May.
