Donatello Rescue Turtle

adult female Olive Ridley turtle (RB.LO.131), 25 February 2018, Bolifushi, S.Malé Atoll, Maldives

Weight/Length: 15.6kg/50.2cm (upon admission); 16.2kg/49.1cm (March 2018);

Donny, an adult female Olive Ridley turtle, was found on 25 February 2018, entangled and floating in Bolifushi (South Malé Atoll) by Best Dives Vittaveli. She was transferred to us the same day for urgent treatment; she had a laceration on the right front flipper all the way to the bone.
Despite the swollen flipper giving poor mobility, Donny is able to dive quite well, and spends her days at the pool bottom with Stevie and Eddy. The flipper is starting to heal, and mobility of the limb is returning.

March 2018

Due to a diagonal fracture we had to amputate Donny’s flipper as it was creating more damage and infection. After surgery, it took a couple of days to get back into her routine, but now she is diving and eating well once more.

May 2018

Donny’s amputation is not healing properly, so we are treating her with antibiotics. We hope she will be fit for release in the coming weeks.

03 July 2018 – Release Day !

Today we waved a fond goodbye to Donny from Kuda Huraa beach. Once in the lagoon, it took her a short while to figure where she was, but she soon swam out of sight into the deep blue. << Bon Voyage>> Donny, and safe travels. 🙂
