We Transplant our 1000th Coral Frame at KH !

Our 1000th coral frame was successfully transplanted in December – a great achievement! This frame was placed in the Green Lagoon and was transplanted as part of our ‘Build A Reef’ programme, with help from a number of guests, all excited to be a part of this important milestone.

Way back in December 2012, our team of Marine Savers biologists welcomed a very unusual guest … a false killer whale! This 300kg/3m gentle giant was was found stranded in the lagoon at Landaa Giraavaru, in a weakened state and unable to swim properly. Read about the rescue attempt and enjoy some exciting photos.

January 2012 – Saifa, the young female Olive Ridley turtle, was found entangled in a fishing net suffering from minor lacerations and buoyancy problems due to stress.

Coral frame monitoring

December 2011 – This month, Landaa’s MDC monitored 301 frames in the Al Barakat area as well as near the Bar and Staff Beach. Many of the Al Barakat frames are sponsored and they are growing really well – very few have needed to be retransplanted. The water temperature on the house reef has dropped to 28°C and all signs of pale bleaching on the frames have disappeared.

December 2011 – was a very busy month for the MDC at Landaa Giraavaru – we transplanted 51 new frames (a monthly record), 32 of which were sponsored by guests. Frames are growing really well in the Staff Beach area due to a very strong current at the moment. We are placing some of the newer sponsored frames here temporarily so that they will grow quickly, and we can then move them to areas that are more challenging to grow coral.

2011 – On 26 June, the Landaa Giraavaru dive team found an injured female Olive Ridley turtle entangled in a fishing net close by Hanifaru bay. They rescued it and brought it back to the marine biologists here at the MDC. This new patient had already lost one front flipper and the other one was deeply lacerated. Watch our video of Juno – a recap of the story, ending with her release back into the ocean.

On 8 November 2011, around 300 false killer whales were spotted, cruising with bottlenose dolphins a few hundred meters south of Landaa Giraavaru. It was a fantastic sight, and quite a rare one too – enjoy the video clip we made.

November 2011 – Dwindling sea turtle populations across Maldivian waters have prompted Four Seasons Resorts Maldives to take action to help safeguard the world’s oldest existing reptiles. This government-endorsed initiative works to increase awareness of turtle conservation, safeguard nests and rear turtle hatchlings until they are big and strong enough to protect themselves in the wild.

9 October 2010 – Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru was honoured to welcome the President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, on October 9, 2010, to inaugurate the Resort’s pioneering Marine Discovery Centre (MDC).
The MDC showcases the Resort’s different environmental projects, including coral reef propagation, manta ray conservation, and fish culture, and is run in partnership with Maldivian environmental consultancy, Seamarc Pvt Ltd.
