A Month Beneath the Waves

Hello everyone! I’m Aditya, and this is my very first blog, so I’m both thrilled and a little nervous to share my journey so far. It’s been just one month since I joined ReefScapers as an Assistant Coral Biologist, and honestly, it’s been nothing short of incredible.

In this short time, I’ve had the opportunity to explore, learn, and experience so much. From coral reef monitoring and maintenance to working closely with turtles and dolphins … every day has brought something new and exciting. I like talking to guests and sharing marine life education to both adults and children, seeing their curiosity spark when we talk about the conservation of marine life. Inspiring others to care about the ocean feels truly rewarding.

The best feeling is our resident turtles have even started recognising me, and being greeted by them each morning has become one of my daily highlights. I’ve also started diving at our house reef, and I also go for a freedive around the water villas, channel, and blue hole which are our restoration sites… each offering a different glimpse of the magical underwater world.

So far, I’ve been lucky enough to encounter over a dozen pilot whales, several blacktip, whitetip, and nurse sharks, various rays, and the vibrant nudibranchs – my personal favourite! Every dive feels like a new adventure, and honestly, the rush of dopamine and adrenaline is unbeatable!

Beyond diving, I’ve also participated in a beach clean-up event, which was a meaningful reminder of how even small actions can make a big difference for our planet. And right now, we’ve just started night dives for coral spawning, soon to be my first-ever close-up experience witnessing this natural wonder in Maldives… I can’t wait!

As the day gently winds down, the Maldivian sunsets have quietly become a ritual of their own. The sky melts into warm shades of orange and gold, as if the ocean and sky are exhaling together. Standing there, grateful and fully present, I often pause to admire this fleeting beauty before gearing up for a night dive. In those moments, I’m reminded how lucky I am to witness such magic, both above and below the waves.

As Jacques Cousteau beautifully said, “People protect what they love.” And the more time I spend beneath the surface, the more deeply I understand those words.

This first month has been full of learning, joy, and unforgettable moments. I’m deeply grateful to be part of a team that shares the same passion for the ocean and its protection.
