22nd April – Dolphin Cruise

The water was lovely and clear today, and we all enjoyed a spectacular show as the dolphins raced alongside our boat. [shashin type=”photo” id=”50, 53, 58, 60, 63, 64″ columns=”6″ size=”128″ crop=”y”]

9th April – Coral Spawning

Keep a look out for a strange red-coloured ‘slick’, floating in the lagoon over these next few days – this is the annual coral spawning event. You might also see many different fish and marine creatures feeding on this delicious natural feast ! In the Maldives, the coral spawning happens over a period of a few days in March or April. It is difficult to predict the exact date as the corals take cues from the weather, tides, water temperature and moon phase. A chemical signal is then released into the water that triggers colonies of certain species to release their egg and sperm bundles (gametes) simultaneously around 2-3 hours after sunset.
