[E]nvironmental education is an important part of our community awareness program, and being able to reach out to the younger generation here in the Maldives is a great way to inform them about the fragile environment that we live in.
In February, the Marine Discovery Centre at Four Seasons Resort Kuda Huraa hosted its first visit for the children of Bodu Huraa School as part of a 4-week educational project aimed at children ages 11-13, designed to increase awareness and foster individual responsibilities towards the environment.
[T]he day started off with the children collecting sea grass, and then assisting Akram – one of our resident marine biologists – in preparing food for turtle feeding. This was followed by a turtle biology class, where the children learnt about life cycles and biology of sea turtles, followed by a 3D documentary film about marine ecosystems.
The day proved to be an enjoyable experience for the students and biologists alike, and we look forward to continuing our work with the school in subsequent weeks.
UPDATES
[T]he Kuda Huraa Marine Discovery Centre has now completed its 4-week school project, during which a total of 25 pupils aged 11 to 13 came to the MDC to learn about sea turtles. This proved to be a very successful project and we are now working to further educate all the local children of Bodu Huraa.
We hope to maintain our strong relationship with the school, and aim to provide conservational programs as an additional and regular fixture of the curriculum.
