December brought a special rescue mission at Landaa Giraavaru: the freeing of a turtle that was entangled in a discarded fishing net, allowing it to swim away without any further treatment.
The turtle was a young adult Olive Ridley, spotted by the dive team on December 26 near the island of Kamadhoo. The netting was severely hindering the turtle’s ability to swim, so it was freed after several precise cuts with a sharp diving knife. As the turtle was not suffering from any injuries it was immediately released to swim away – let’s hope it has long and trouble-free life out in the ocean!
Thanks to Tom, Ammadey and the Resort guests who helped in this rescue and release, and to Tom for capturing these fabulous photos.
