Clover & Joker – Olive Ridley Turtles

Seven olive ridley sea turtles were rescued by Landaa’s Giraavaru’s marine team between January and April 2012 – all victims of ghost nets. Clover was released on April 8th and Joker on April 10th, both having made a full recovery in Landaa’s Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. Watch their video below.

Weera the Olive Ridley Turtle

On 14 January 2012, two olive ridley turtles were found tangled in fishing net drifting close to Kuda Huraa. Both turtles were set free but the smaller one – Weera – experiencing difficulties, was brought back to Kuda Huraa’s Marine Discovery Centre for monitoring.  We diagnosed that Weera was suffering from a positive buoyancy problem, a common issue with stressed sea turtles that leaves them exposed to threats from predators, boats or ghost fishing.

Weera was nursed back to health for a week in Kuda Huraa’s turtle pools, before being released, fully recovered, on 20 January 2012. Thanks to everyone involved in Weera’s rescue, recuperation and release. You can view a video of his story below.
