January 2012 – “Happy New Year” from the Marine Discovery Centre team at Landaa Giraavaru.

The New Year message in our photo comes from the small, idyllic island of Voavah, just 5km (3 miles) north of Landaa Giraavaru.  From afar it looks like paradise, but it is common to see washed up garbage – indeed, the message has actually been spelled out in fresh oranges which were found floating in the lagoon.

So a fun message, but an important one for us all to take personal responsibility for this ever-growing issue of waste management.  We can start by limiting the amount of plastics we buy and use, and then remembering to separate any garbage out for local recycling schemes.
