Marine Biologist (closed)

We are seeking a Marine Biologist to join our Marine Discovery Centre team to help with our conservation programmes. The post is an excellent opportunity for an individual in the early stages of their career looking to build on their current experience and develop more specialised interests in the field.

The role

• Participate & support all programmes: coral frame propagation, turtle rehabilitation, fish breeding.
• Run guest excursions, snorkelling trips and activities.
• Photograph and document marine life; collect data and perform data entry.
• Write illustrated reports (in English) of team activities and targets.

The ideal candidate

• Academic qualifications in a relevant discipline (Marine Biology, Environmental Science).
• Experience in marine conservation and research, ideally gained in a tropical country.
• Extensive knowledge of coral reefs and marine life.
• Confident swimmer with SCUBA certification (PADI Dive Master desirable).
• Experience of data collection and analysis (bonus: mapping software, programming, databases).
• Good written/spoken English (extra languages desirable) and experience in public-facing roles.

Turtle Biologist (closed)

We are seeking an experienced Turtle Biologist to work as part of our Marine Discovery Centre (MDC) team to run our turtle conservation programmes, based at Four Seasons Resort Maldives.

The role

• Responsibility for all turtle projects at both Centres (including rehabilitation, head start, turtle identification).
• Manage the diet, health and rehabilitation of all rescue animals and hatchlings.
• Maintain and improve existing facilities and care programmes; explore new research ideas.
• Outreach to local schools, communities and fellow biologists country-wide.
• Monitor beaches for turtle nesting behaviour, to identify and protect nests and hatchlings.
• Collect and process photographs and data; maintain and update databases.
• Conduct marine life briefings and guided snorkels/dives for guests and visiting journalists.

The ideal candidate

• BSc/MSc/PhD in Veterinarian Medicine or Marine Sciences (Marine Biology, Environmental Science).
• 2+ years’ experience in tropical marine conservation and research, specialising in turtle rescue and rehabilitation.
• Excellent communication skills, and a good standard of written/spoken English (extra languages desirable).

Marine Discovery Centre Manager (closed)

We are currently seeking a Manager to oversee all aspects of the Marine Discovery Centre (MDC) and its environmental programmes, based at Four Seasons Resorts Maldives.

The role

• Management and responsibility for the MDC staff and all daily operations.
• Supervision & support of all programmes: coral propagation, turtle conservation, aquaculture.
• Supervision & training of Apprentices, Interns and Eco-Volunteers.
• Regular high level meetings with Four Seasons management.
• Regular written reports (in English) of MDC activities and targets.
• Management of guest activities, public-relations and environmental awareness events.

The ideal candidate

• Academic qualifications in a relevant discipline (Marine Biology, Environmental Science).
• Experience in marine conservation and research, ideally gained in a tropical country.
• Specific knowledge and experience in the fields of coral biology and sea turtle conservation.
• Experience of project management and staff supervision.
• SCUBA certification.
• An excellent standard of spoken and written English.

Coral Biologist (closed)

We currently have a vacancy for a Coral Biologist, to oversee our Reefscapers Coral Propagation Project and research programmes, based at Four Seasons Resorts Maldives.

The role

• Manage all aspects of our Coral Propagation Programme and associated activities.
• Maintain our coral frame database and provide photo updates for guest-sponsored frames.
• Collect coral fragments to create new frames; maintain and monitor/photograph existing frames.
• Write monthly illustrated reports (in English) for resort management and to feature on our websites.
• Conduct marine life briefings and guided snorkels for guests and journalists; devise new guest activities.
• Supervise and train our interns, apprentices and volunteers.
• Work with colleagues to explore new research ideas for coral propagation and the wider marine biology field.

The ideal candidate

• BSc/MSc/PhD in Marine Sciences (Marine Biology, Environmental Science).
• Experience in coral conservation and research, including coral identification techniques and reef propagation.
• Good standard of written/spoken English (extra languages desirable) and good communication skills.
• Excellent team player, able to educate/supervise colleagues; experience of awareness/education programmes.
• Confident swimmer with SCUBA certification (PADI Dive Master desirable); boat driving license (preferred).
• Physically fit non-smoker, able to carry 20kg weight and work long hours daily in the lagoon under full sun.
• Accurate computer skills and numeracy; experience of Excel and databases (preferred).

Aquaculture Technician (closed)

We are seeking an Aquaculture Technician to work as part of our Marine Discovery Centre (MDC) team, based at Four Seasons Resort Maldives. This post is a rare opportunity for the right individual looking to further their knowledge and research skills within our resort-based Fish Lab.

The role

• Helping to run our ornamental fish breeding programme, eg: Clownfish, Seahorses and other species.
• Growing and researching various plankton cultures in our Lab.
• Maintaining and improving our marine aquarium and ‘touch pool’.
• Working as part of the MDC team of dedicated marine biologists.
• Supporting all programmes: coral frame propagation, turtle rehabilitation, guest awareness and activities.
• Collecting and analysing data; contributing to regular written reports (in English) of work activities and targets.

The ideal candidate

• Experience in tropical marine conservation and research.
• Knowledge and experience of marine aquaria and tropical fish species.
• Experience of data collection and analysis.

The Four Seasons Apprenticeship programme opens every December, training young Maldivians in all aspects of the hotel and hospitality industry over a 12-month period. Placement at our Discovery Centre can be a good start to a career as a marine biologist.

We have several Internship posts each year, depending on staffing levels and availability. You should be a post-graduate Marine Biology student (or similar) working towards an MSc/PhD qualification (preferred), looking for work placement and the opportunity to experiment and collect data in the field.

The position of Eco-Volunteer is open year-round to anyone with a keen interest in marine biology and the environment. You pay for accommodation, and work with our team members to gain valuable experience … and hopefully have some fun along the way !
