December 2011 – This month the Marine Discover Centre at Landaa Giraavaru monitored a total of 301 frames in the Al Barakat area as well as near the Bar and Staff Beach.
Many of the Al Barakat frames are sponsored and they are growing really well – very few have needed to be re-transplanted. The water temperature on the house reef has dropped to 28°C and all signs of pale bleaching on the frames have disappeared.
New Bar Frames – we moved 6 small frames from the north reef crest to the new bar area. The frames we transplanted in July and are now well established. This area is quite shallow and sandy, so we will keep a close eye on the health of the frames and the growth of hair algae. We hope that having the frames there will attract more fish to the area.
The 2 photos included here are of frame # LG.598 in the Al Barakat area, and show the coral growth after 6 months.
